clean glass for fireplaceGas fireplaces with glass fronts are very common in our area. The glass at the front of the fireplace helps keep the flames and combustion gasses contained. This lets you enjoy your fireplace without the risk of smoke and flames that is associated with open-flame fireplaces. Unfortunately, it is very common for us to find fireplace glass that is covered with soot, stained by smoke, and hazy in appearance. The good news is that it is possible to clean the glass and make it look as good as new with just a little bit of effort and common household cleaners or a product that is designed to clean fireplace glass.

Before working on the fireplace, make sure that the fireplace and fireplace glass are cool to the touch. To clean the glass you will need to remove it. Instructions for removing the glass can typically be found on the fireplace manufacturer’s website. Find the model number of the fireplace, (typically found on a date plate inside the fireplace), and then search for the fireplace manual. Typically there are clips that hold the glass in place. Lay the glass down on a towel to keep it from being damaged or scratched.

how to clean fireplace glassThere are several household products that may work for cleaning the glass. Two of the most commonly recommended are baking soda and vinegar. To use baking soda, mix it with some water to create a paste. Then use a brush or cloth to rub it onto the glass. Then wipe it off with a paper towel. Vinegar does not need to be mixed. It can be used in its undiluted form. Pour some into a bowl, dip a rag into the vinegar, and use it to clean the glass. Most of the vinegar will evaporate from the glass on its own. Wipe down the glass with some dry paper towels when you’re done.

We recommend using a glass cleaning product that has been specifically designed for the purpose of cleaning fireplace glass. Read and follow the directions for the cleaner that you use. Most of the time, the cleaner calls for you to rub it on and polish it off with a clean, soft rag.

When cleaning the glass, it is also important to check the glass for cracks or damage. A fireplace with cracked glass should not be used. You should also have your fireplace inspected and serviced by a qualified contractor on an annual basis. This will help ensure that the fireplace is burning properly and efficiently. A properly combusting fireplace will produce less soot, haze, and smoke which will mean that the fireplace glass stays cleaner, longer.
