Washing machine hoses leak

Braided hoses are less likely to break.

Water is the natural nemesis of homes and can cause tremendous damage in a very short amount of time. Whether it originates from roof leaks or corroded water distribution pipes, damage is sure to follow. However, one of the most common reasons for water damage in the home is water leakage at the washing machine.

While washing machines have become increasingly advanced over the years and leakage issues have been significantly reduced, the most common reason for failure or leakage are the hose connections between the machine and the water supply valves. Old hoses composed of rubber are prone to bursting as they age and can lead to significant water damage in a short amount of time. While replacing any rubber hoses with braided mesh stainless steel hoses is recommended and significantly reduces the chance for a burst hose, the valves or the machine itself can still leak.

Since many washing machines in newer homes are located on the second floor, preventing leakage has become even more important as leakage can cause damage not only to the floor but also to the ceiling of the first floor underneath. Installing a drain pan under the washing machine to catch and redirect water to the exterior or to a floor drain can help prevent this issue. While drain pans can come in many different shapes and sizes, most are low edged plastic pans with a drain pipe attached to allow water to be redirected to an area it cannot do damage.

While it is easiest to install a washing machine drain pan before the machine is install, this can still be done with a machine already in place. First, turn off the water supply hoses at the wall, unplug the machine, and disconnect the supply hoses and drain hose. Place a bucket underneath this area and have a towel ready for any residual water left in the hoses that may drain out. Next, use a dolly to lift and move the machine away from the area where the pan will be installed. Washing machines are very heavy and this should be done with the assistance of a second person. You may have to install a drain pan pipe to the correct size using a hacksaw if you are installing a new pan. If you are replacing a pan, then you can use the existing drain pipe. Next, install the pan onto the floor and adjust as necessary for the drain pipe to fit into the floor or wall drain opening. If there is no existing drain hole you may have to drill one into the pan. Lastly, move the washing machine back into place, reconnect the hoses, and plug it in. Be sure to check for leaks after the next few washes, particularly around the hose connections.
